COMPARE compares the contents of two text files and lists the lines either unique to each file, or common to both.

What it's for:
CSV2TXT converts multiline CSV format text files to a single
line text file format. All "=" signs are removed and continuations
abandoned for a single line per record.How to use it:
Type CVS2TXT <CSV filename> <new filename> at the DCL-prompt.

What it's for:
DB64 is a conversion program that decompresses base-64 encoded text files into their decoded binary form. Base-64 (also known as Hex-64) is a format that is used mainly to send binary files over e-mail.
How to use it:
Type DB64 <base64 encoded filename> <output filename> [switches] at the DCL-prompt.

What it's for:
DECset is a group of programmer productivity tools that aid in the development of system or application software on an OpenVMS system.
How to use it:
Type DECSET from your DCL-prompt.
Where to get help:
At your DCL-prompt, type HELP DECSET, or check Compaq's online DECset information.
What it is:
In read mode this program creates a vocabulary database of all words found in the input text file -- useful for creating a personal dictionary. In compare mode this program displays any words in the input text file that are NOT found in the vocabulary database.
How to use it:
At the DCL-prompt, type DICT <vocab file> <text file> [/qualifier].

What it's for:
DIFFERENCES compares the contents of two disk files and displays a listing of the records that do not match.

ESU is a utility which builds a list of processes on the system, optionally sorts & sifts the list, formats the list for output, and displays the list on the terminal device.

What it's for:
EVE is a text editor.

GUNZIP
What it's for:
Hytelnet is an older hypertext browser for internet-accessible telnet sites, designed to assist users in reaching all of the INTERNET-accessible libraries, Free-nets, BBSs, & other information sites by Telnet.
How to use it:
At your DCL-prompt, type HYTELNET.

What is it?
IRC enables people connected anywhere on the Internet to join in live discussions.
How to use it:
Type IRC at the $ prompt

What it's for:
KCMERLIN allows you to access the MERLIN (Missouri Education and Research Libraries Information Network)
Library Catalog, OVID, and SiteSearch databases through the MERLIN gateway.How to use it:
Type KCMERLIN at the DCL-prompt, press <return> twice. Type YES when asked if you want to connect to MERLIN.

KERMIT is communications software that you can use for file transfer, terminal connection, script programming, and international character set conversion.
How to use it:
Type KERMIT at your DCL-prompt.

What it's for:
Lynx is a text-based (non-graphical) internet browser. It enables you to load quite large webpages very quickly, and, once you learn a few of the keyboard shortcuts, it is simple to use.
How to use it:
Type "LYNX"

What it's for:
Macro-64 Assembler compiler.
How to use it:
After creating your source file with a text editor, use MACRO/ALPHA <filename> at the DCL-prompt to compile your program.

What it's for:
MAIL allows you to send email messages to local users, i.e. other people with accounts on the same system. MAIL cannot be used to send internet email, to users on other systems (xxx@hotmail.com, xxx@umkc.edu, etc.)
How to use it:
Type MAIL at your DCL prompt. To send a message, type SEND at the Mail> prompt. At the To: prompt, type the recipient's CCTR username. After composing the message, use CTRL-Z to send it.

What it's for:
Maple is an analytical computation package.
How to use it:Type: $ MAPLE
Where to get help:At the Maple ">" prompt, type "?" for online help, tutorials, etc. For additional assistance with Maple questions, contact dwall@umkc.edu . For problems related specifically to running Maple on CCTR, contact ops@cctr.umkc.edu .
What it's for:
MASS_REPLACE allows you to replace all occurrences of a text string in a file, or group of files, with another text string.
How to use it:
At the DCL-prompt, type MASS_REPLACE <filespec> <str1> <str2>.
For example, if you are in your web directory, then MASS_REPLACE [...]*.* http://cctr.umkc.edu/yourusername/ http://y.student.umkc.edu/yourusername/ will update all non-relative links between your pages to reflect the URL on the new server.

What it's for:
NEWSRDR allows you to read and post messages to USENET newsgroups.
How to use it:
At your DCL-prompt, type NEWS

What it's for:
DEC Pascal compiler.
How to use it:
After creating your source file with a text editor, use PASCAL <filename> at the DCL-prompt to compile your program.

Read the Compaq Pascal Users' Manual for OpenVMS, or type HELP PASCAL at the DCL-prompt.
What it's for:
Phone lets you "talk" with another CCTR user. The screen is divided into two panes, and each can type messages to the other.
How to use it:
To make a call: Type PHONE at the DCL-prompt. At the %-prompt, type DIAL <USERNAME>.
To answer a call: When you receive the message that someone is calling you, type PHONE at the DCL-prompt. At the %-prompt, type ANSWER.

What it's for:
The SAS System is a powerful statistical analysis program for all kinds of data analysis.
How to use it:Initially, you will need to contact ops@cctr.umkc.edu and tell us that you would like to use SAS on CCTR.
After your account has been given SAS-use capability:
Interactively: $ SAS
Batch mode: $ RUNSAS

What it's for:
This is a spell checking tool.
How to use it:
At the DCL-prompt, type SPELL. Choose the "spell" option, and type in the name of the file you want to spell check.

Use the "help" option within SPELL, or contact ops@cctr.umkc.edu .
What it's for:
SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences eXtended) is a statistical program.
How to use it:Interactively: $ SPSS
Batch mode: $ RUNSPSS

What it's for:
TAR lets you create/extract archive files. For example, if you have several layers of subdirectories and hundreds of files under your WWW directory, using TAR lets you conglomerate these into one file, greatly simplifying file transfer. WinZip or similar products can be used to untar tarred files at the destination.
How to use it:
At your DCL-prompt, type tar file-specification -[option/s].
For example, to glob everything in your WWW Directory into a tarfile called "bob.tar" , use tar -cvf bob.tar [.www]*.*

TELNET is a program that allows you to connect with another computer. Once connected, you can enter commands via the TELNET window and they will be executed by the remote computer.

What it's for:
TIN is a program that allows you to read and post messages to USENET newsgroups.
How to use it:
At your DCL-prompt, type TIN.

What it's for:
VMS2SMTP is a utility that allows you to forward email archived on CCTR to an account on another system.
How to use it:
